Get cooking with avocados
Avocados are one of the world’s most versatile fruits. You can use them in sweet or savoury foods, as they have a wonderfully rich taste without being a high fat ingredient.
The history of avocados:
You’ll be surprised to know that avocados date back to the mummies of Peru, who were discovered
buried with avocado pits. The fruit flourished in Mexico and Central America, where the Aztecs called
it ahuacati, meaning testicles. This was obviously due to its appearance when hanging from a tree.
The amazing thing about avocados is that they are available all year round.
When you buy an avo, choose the fruit with a firm, dark green or a
peddled purple exterior. This of course depends on the variety
you’re after. Shriveled or puckered skin can tell you the fruit
was picked too soon, and it may have an off taste or
be overripe. It’s also best that you don’t refrigerate
avocado as it can affect the ripening process.
New ways to use avocados:
A ripe avocado has a delicious, tender
flesh. You’ll find it ideal in smoothies,
sauces, sandwiches, salsas, salads,
dressings or even as a skin cream.
