COVID-19: what’s new

Here’s the latest from this fortnight.

  • The Australian Government has revised its incentive program, taking a more flexible approach. Workers who take up short-term ag work, are now eligible for up to $2,000 in relocation assistance when they complete just 40 hours of work over a two-week period. Read more. We’re improving how you enter your Infocado data

Have you noticed a few changes when you go to enter your Infocado data? Our new and improved AvoData system has now entered its first live phase, which means you will no longer be using GFA to provide us with your forecast and dispatch data. All users will be progressively added to the new system as new regions approach their harvest but if you’re starting your harvest a bit earlier than expected, please give Daniel or Amanda a call on 07 3846 6566 or email so we can get you up and running.

A smashing Tristate season expected

The number of avocados grown in Sunraysia and the Riverland this coming season is expected to at least double last season’s production. Avocados Australia's Tristate director Kym Thiel told ABC Rural the good growing conditions that were expected followed last year's light crop, when only 435,000 trays were packed.

As part of the 2021 Avocado Irrigation Summit, the Avogrow Webinar Series will feature the guest presentation from Udi Gafni, the Technical Services Lead for Avocado Granot, Israel to the entire industry. Udi will join the summit group live via Zoom next Wednesday evening to present information on the avocado irrigation practices in Israel and those in orchards that he consults to in Chile, Peru, South Africa, Kenya and Australia.

Managing avocados with less water: Childers Qld

Avocados Australia has arranged a special workshop for Central Queensland growers on 24 May in Childers. Growers will hear from speakers with a range of experiences in dealing with dry times in orchards, including Agriculture Victoria’s Jeremy Giddings (read his article from the upcoming Talking Avocados here), former horticultural grower Phillip Mansell, and Avocados Australia’s Liz Singh. Have your say on avocado levy investment

Hort Innovation will soon begin gathering feedback on a new avocado strategic investment plan (SIP). The draft SIP will be available at from 21 May (next Friday). An online feedback form will also be available to provide comment on the draft industry SIPs. Drafts will be available online for two weeks, until COB Friday, 4 June 2021. Sterile fruit flies released over Adelaide. 6/5/2021

Costa Group is saddened to learn of the passing of Frank Costa AO. Frank was a great Australian who through his leadership and vision helped build the Costa Group into the global leading fresh produce business that it is today. Read the statement from Costa here, and a memorial on the ABC here.

Scam alert from the ATO

There’s a new scam email doing the rounds. The email asks people to update their myGov or myGovID details, via a provided “verification” link. The link goes to a fake myGov logon page designed to steal your personal information, including your passport and driver’s licence details. Read more.

Asia Fruit Logistica reschedules to 2022. 11/5/2021

Organisers have made the decision to reschedule the event to 7-9 September 2022. However, for 2021, the Asiafruit Congress will morph into a two-day online event on 28-29 September, but will return to a one-day, in-person event in 2022. Read more in Asiafruit.

East African growers keen on avocados. 3/5/2021

East African and Nigerian avocado farmers are eager to enter the growing avocado export market. Both Nigeria and Uganda aim to drastically increase their avocado production and become top exporters in the next decade. Kenya is already among the global top 10. Read more in FreshPlaza.

New campaign from Peru. 3/5/2021

Planned expansion in the Philippines. 3/5/2021

Workshop announced: Japan registrations for 2020/21 season

It’s time to start preparing for the 2021/22 export season to Japan. One significant change to the process this year is the introduction of a new online registration system for avocado growers and packers. Avocados Australia and DPIRD are holding a hybrid in-person/Zoom workshop at Manjimup on 1 June, to explain the new system and provide updates on the current Japanese market, registration process and audits. Post commencement consultation on ag export legislation

The Australian Government of Agriculture, Water and the Environment (DAWE) is holding post commencement consultation, to review the process for development and roll out. The department is holding face-to-face consultation sessions: Hobart (2 June), Melbourne (3 June), Canberra (7 June), Perth (8 June), Adelaide (9 June), Sydney (16 June), and Brisbane (17 June). Avocado tissue culture industry update: Hort Connections

The University of Queensland Professor Neena Mitter and her research team at the Queensland Alliance for Agriculture and Food Innovation in partnership with the University of Southern Queensland and Central Queensland University, are inviting the avocado community to an industry stakeholder’s information day. Also on 7 June (in the same room as the Avocados Australia afternoon event), this event runs from 8.30am-12.30pm. The 2021 Avocado Regional Forums, organised by the extension project team (AV17005) will be held on 22 and 24 June. The forum on 22 June will be at Pemberton, but a location has yet to be set for 24 June.


Pest management workshops

As part of Hort Innovation project Review and extension of avocado pests and their management (AV19001), pest management workshops are now being offered to growers and agronomists interested in learning more about managing invertebrate pests in avocados. The workshops run for approximately three hours and include a 45 minute presentation on pest management followed by a discussion on the pros and cons of current practice. The main emphasis of the workshops is developing a management strategy that deals with all pests of concern for those participating in the workshop.
