Dr Ian Newton – entomologist – to speak at the Summit

Australian commercial avocado growers are invited to attend the biennial Avocado Production R&D Summit happening from 8.30am to 5.00pm on 10 September 2025 at the Brisbane Airport Conference Centre. The theme will be: Profitable Production.

Topic areas:
Attendees will be able to ask questions of panel members on a range of production-related topics. Topics will broadly include:

🌳   Tree physiology and yield consistency
🤖   Future trends in monitoring and harnessing AI
🦾   Automation opportunities
🌿   Advances in Irrigation, nutrition, pollination
🐛   Pest and disease management 

Dr Ian Newton, Principal Entomologist with the Queensland Department of Primary Industries, has been confirmed as one of the speakers. For more information please read his Bio below.

The Summit will provide the opportunity for researchers, growers and agronomists to network. They will also hear about what’s happening in research and development related to production in the avocado industry.

About Dr Ian Newton – Ian has a PhD in entomology (University of Queensland) and over 26 years of experience as an applied entomologist, working in horticulture and tree crops for the past 20 years, with considerable experience in avocados, other fruit and tree nuts. Ian has extensive knowledge and experience in IPM RD&E, including research on insect biology and ecology, biological control, insect pathogens, biopesticides, chemical control and pheromone trapping. He has considerable experience with Banana and Fruit Spotting Bugs, which includes development and use of pheromone traps, thresholds, biology/ecology and pheromone trap development.
