China Trade Mission further builds on trade relations
Avocados Australia’s trade delegation that recently visited China included attendance at the China International Fruit Expo (CIFE) in Shanghai from the 27 to 29 August. Matt Kleyn, Avocados Australia’s Chair, was front and centre, showcasing Australian avocados and playing a key role in negotiating the AUD$300 million pre-purchase agreement with the Shanghai markets.
The objective of the study tour was to further engage with, and build-on, key relationships with Chinese trade stakeholders, and reinforce the value that the industry has placed on opening up market access with mainland China. Avocados Australia has made it a strategic priority to open up new markets to ensure the future prosperity of the industry so avocado growers can achieve sustainable, profitable returns.
The expected forecast still shows there will be a strong supply of Australian avocados, so Avocados Australia will continue to work hard to increase demand, both domestically and overseas.
Our Chinese trade partners have seen and tasted our avocados. We again have commercial agreements in place. Work has been done on the necessary R&D to provide robust data to support the phytosanitary protocols, with further R&D work currently underway to provide additional phytosanitary pathways.
According to John Tyas, Avocados Australia’s CEO, the industry is now “ready to do business” however some obstacles still need to be overcome.
Look out for an update on this topic in the next issue of Talking Avocados magazine.
