Australian fruits met Malaysian culinary creativity at UOW Malaysia

On 5 June, Australian fruits took centre stage at UOW Malaysia Glenmarie Campus, bringing premium produce and future chefs together in one delicious workshop.

The Australian Fruits Culinary Experience brought together 87 students and lecturers in tastings, product education and a chef-led masterclass, highlighting the versatility of premium Australian fruits in Malaysian-inspired dishes.

Led by Chef Arieff, Chef Shahrir and Chef Annuar, the workshop explored Australian avocados, table grapes and summerfruit and inspired the next generation of chefs in Malaysia.

As part of the Australian Fruits Culinary Project, this workshop was funded by the ASEAN-Australia Centre, supporting initiatives that strengthen connections between Australia and Southeast Asia through education, industry engagement, culture and people-to-people exchange.

A smart Australian ingredient that adds healthy fats and fibre to Malaysian shopping trolleys

According to Assoc Prof Dr Snigdha Misra from the Jeffrey Cheah School of Medicine and Health Sciences, Monash University Malaysia, Australian avocados can be a practical addition to balanced eating.

“Australian avocados are naturally rich in unsaturated fats, especially monounsaturated fats, and also provide dietary fibre to help make meals more satisfying,” she said.

“They also provide dietary fibre, which helps add fullness and satisfaction to meals. This makes avocados a useful ingredient for everyday dishes — especially when paired with familiar Malaysian flavours.”

As part of the 2026 Australian Avocados campaign in Malaysia, Dr Snigdha joined shoppers at AEON Bandar Utama for a nutrition session and live cooking demonstration featuring Malaysian-inspired avocado recipes.

Shoppers were surprised by how easily avocados complemented familiar local dishes, adding creaminess, texture and nutrition without overpowering traditional flavours.

From salads and rice bowls to kaya toast and local-style snacks, Australian avocados bring flavour and goodness to everyday meals.
