New Avocado Canopy Management Project Launched

NEW PROJECT:   AV24011Optimising avocado yield with region-specific canopy management: insights from light interception and canopy modelling

Hort Innovation has launched project AV24011, led by the Queensland Department of Primary Industries and Wilkie Horticulture, to guide future R&D in region-specific avocado canopy management. Rather than conducting trials, the team, Gerhard Rossouw, John Wilkie and Neil White, will develop strategic recommendations for future major initiatives.

Project’s aims:

Over the next 12 months, the project will:

  • Review literature, grower input, and expert insights
  • Assess how canopy manipulation, tree physiology, and light-optimisation technologies can be applied commercially
  • Consult growers in key regions to identify challenges and opportunities, understanding how regional conditions and current management practices influence canopy performance

Findings will inform future investment and development of best-practice canopy strategies tailored to local conditions.
