NielsenIQ Q2 2026 report
Australian Q2 retail wrap-up
Curious about how shopper behaviour is reshaping the fresh fruit and veg aisle?
Consumer intelligence and market research company, NielsenIQ, have published their NIQ Fresh Retail Wrap Up with dedicated analysis of Australia’s fresh grocery market, including fruit, vegetables, meat, dairy, bakery and seafood performance for this quarter.
What does the report tell us?
Key findings include:
Shoppers continue to spend more cautiously. Grocery sales are growing (5.1% value, 2.0% volume), driven by higher prices and more frequent trips, while spend and volume per trip continue to decline.
Fresh remains the primary driver of growth. Meat, fruit, vegetables and deli continue to lead both in‑store and online performance.
Discount and online channels keep gaining share. Discounters and online now represent around a quarter of grocery sales, with online continuing to outperform traditional supermarket growth.
Shoppers are increasingly shopping across more retailers. 56% of households shopped at 4 retailers this quarter, highlighting intensifying competition for share of wallet.
Omnichannel is becoming more critical to growth. Cross‑shopping between online and brick & mortar is rising, with online trips delivering ~2x higher spend per visit than in‑store.
