Avocado Integrated Pest Management workshop (Zoom)

Do you need a primer on integrated pest management (IPM)? Keen to learn from the comfort of your office (or home)? Due to ongoing COVID-19 travel restrictions, the pest management workshops planned as part of Review and extension of avocado pests and their management (AV19001) will now be held via Zoom.

The pest management workshops will run for 1.5 hours and are aimed at growers and agronomists interested in IPM. By the end of the workshop, you will have a one-page IPM strategy developed collaboratively with your fellow participants, which means that it is tailored to the specific issues of the growers involved and will cover biological, cultural and chemical control options.

The project team is aware that fruitspotting bug is a major obstacle for implementing IPM in some regions, so in the relevant workshops they will work with participants to identify ways to improve pest management using the tools and knowledge that is currently available. In the future there will hopefully be more control options but until then the aim is to make the best use of what is accessible now. The workshops will also provide valuable feedback for the direction of future research.

Five workshops will be held on the following Mondays at 1pm AEST: 6 and 20 September, 4 and 18 October, and 1 November.

To register for a workshop please email Jessica at jessica@ipmtechnologies.com.au.

This project has been funded by Hort Innovation using the avocado research and development levy, and contributions from the Australian Government.

Avocado wholesalers workshop

Insights into avocado quality and industry trends

West Australian wholesalers and ripeners are invited to a workshop to get an update on Australian avocado fruit quality and industry trends. The event at the MarketWest boardroom at the Canning Vale markets on the 25 June at 8:30–10:30am is free and a light breakfast will be offered during the two-hour session.

Topics to be covered include:

  • Industry trends and supply forecasting – John Tyas and Hayleigh Dawson, Avocados Australia
  • Fruit quality through avocado supply chains – Noel Ainsworth, Qld Dept of Agriculture and Fisheries
  • Retail fruit quality monitoring findings – Adam Goldwater, Applied Horticultural Research

Click here for the full agenda.

Recent monitoring of avocado quality has identified that more than 90% of fruit from Western Australia meets consumers’ expectations of quality promoting repeat purchasing. However, with a light crop in 2020/21 and a heavy crop expected in 2021/22, quality will be in focus to meet consumer expectations in both Australian and export markets. As local production increases, growers have an increasing focus on producing fruit that can maintain quality, tolerating the time it takes to move fruit around Australia and around the world.

The AV18000 and AV17005 projects have been funded by Hort Innovation, using the Hort Innovation avocado industry research and development levy, co-investment from the Queensland Department of Agriculture and Fisheries, Western Australia Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development, and Avocados Australia, and contributions from the Australian Government with in-kind support from Rudge Produce Systems. Hort Innovation is the grower-owned, not-for-profit research and development corporation for Australian horticulture.
